Raspberry Pi is an ARM-based mini computer board which uses a SD card for storage, has 2 USB ports and a network port. It can be hooked up to peripherals like keyboard, mouse and the network to become a considerably acceptable personal computer. Because it also have a HDMI output, it is popularly used as a Home Theatre streaming server, directly connecting to a HDTV. The size of the board is slightly larger than a credit card, probably one of the reasons why it was that popular with the techies. One can play games, HD videos, or even work on office documents and spead sheets on this little nifty device.
It is reported that one of the distributors of the Raspberry Pi board, Premier Farnell(branded Element14), claims that they alone have already sold more than 500,000 units of Raspberry Pi. They are only one of the two official distributors for the product. The other distributor, RS Components, have yet to show any statistics on their sales of the Raspberry Pi, but Premier Farnell is almost certain that the sales are advancing and probably already surpassing the million mark.
To celebrate the success with Raspberry Pi, Premier Farnell designed a poster which one of the examples, stacked 500,000 units of Raspberry Pi on top of one another, achieving heights higher than the 111 times the Empire State Building. Premier Farnell claims that they are producing 4000 units of Raspberry Pi every day, averaging producing one unit every 7.5 seconds.
