According to foreign media reports, Samsung may soon release their first smart watches. There have been recent leaks on Samsung’s trademark application on a “Galaxy Gear” brand name for the new smart watch.
We have learnt from a document from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that Samsung is indeed working on wearable devices. The registered Trademark name is known as “Samsung Galaxy Gear”, but descriptions of the trademark is vague. We know that it will come in a wristband/bracelet form factor and can provide users with internet access, answer and make calls, send and receive email as well as SMS functions.
The device is likely to be equipped with a touch screen and will include a micro USB port and microphone module. Moreover, this device will probably be equipped with a flexible screen technology which Samsung showed at CES 2013 earlier this year.
However, we do not know if Galaxy Gear will be running on Android or another OS built specifically for it. Of course, the device can also be connected to any other operating system via bluetooth to allow the display of notifications and other functions.
Analysts believe that Samsung will release an Android equipped smart watch as part of their developmental goals. Like the previous Galaxy Muse device, Galaxy Gear could also be a companion to the current Samsung Galaxy series of smartphones and tablets, providing multiple ways for users to interact with their core mobile computing device. They may also introduce body monitoring features that are found similarly to those in Jawbone UP or Nike FuelBand.
In fact, Samsung has confirmed that they have plans for a smart watch earlier this March, but did not disclose on any specific release dates and hardware specifications. Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Mobile business group Lee Young-hee said in a recent interview with Bloomberg that Samsung has been working very hard on the new smart watch and hopes to bring the new device to market as soon as possible. Samsung is inventing the next generation’s devices and a smart watch is definitely one of them.
Samsung will have a news conference on Sepetember 4 in Berlin, Germany. Could Samsung be using the chance to launch the new smart watch alongside with the new Galaxy Note 3 Phablet? We’ll have to wait and see.
