AI Education Summit – Redefining the educational landscape
With AI education as its central theme, the exhibition provided a comprehensive platform for dialogue, collaboration, and discovery, highlighting the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in redefining educational paradigms.
At the AI Education Summit this year, we had the pleasure to learn from five distinguished speakers from across SEA:
- Singapore: Mr. Oliver Tian, Honorary Advisor at Asia Pacific Assistive Robotics Association (APARA), emphasized the importance of leveraging AI to enhance human intelligence (HI). He stressed that while AI is reshaping the educational landscape, there’s no need to fear its advancements. Tian highlighted that individuals who understand how to utilize AI effectively will remain irreplaceable.
- Thailand: Dr. Kritsachai Somsaman, Centre Director at SEAMEO STEM-ED, discussed the significant potential of AI in education, citing a remarkable 2-sigma improvement in learning performance achievable through AI-based tutoring and assessment methods. He underscored the importance of viewing AI as a tool to augment human capabilities rather than a threat to traditional education.
- Malaysia: Richard Chung, General Manager of Penang STEM, addressed the misconception that AI should be feared. He emphasized the importance of adaptability and encouraged embracing AI technologies rather than shying away from them.
- Philippines: Atty. Ira Paulo Pozon, Chief of Staff and Manager of Legal, Policy, and Quality Management Office at SEAMEO INNOTECH, discussed the necessity of integrating AI into education without resistance. He drew parallels to historical technological advancements like the scientific calculator and Microsoft Excel, emphasizing that AI should be embraced and leveraged.
- Indonesia: Dr. Gatot Hari Priowirjanto, Managing Director of SEAMEO Indonesian Centre, highlighted the inevitability of AI’s role in the future workforce. He stressed the importance of preparing the younger generation to be fluent in AI technologies from a young age to bridge the digital divide and ensure they are equipped with the necessary skills for the future job market.
Collectively, the speakers emphasized that while AI is reshaping education, there’s no need to fear its advancements. Instead, individuals and educational institutions should approach AI with caution but also with courage, recognizing its potential to enhance learning outcomes and prepare future generations for the evolving workforce. They underscored the importance of integrating AI into education curricula and fostering a mindset that embraces technological innovation rather than shying away from it. Ultimately, they advocated for the development of better humans through AI fluency, rather than less technology.
