Ubisoft’s Paris Studio has presented an early iteration of AI-driven NPCs, leveraging generative technology to engage players in real-time conversations.
Known as the “NEO NPC” initiative, it relies on NVIDIA’s Audio2Face software for lifelike mouth and facial animations, along with Inworld’s Large Language Model (LLM) for authentic dialogue exchanges.
In the words of Narrative Director Virginie Mosser, the traditional process of crafting character backgrounds and dialogues has shifted. Rather than relying on static text, the AI model directly incorporates NPC attributes and traits to formulate responses.
The LLM comprehends the NPC’s role and context, providing relevant responses within the virtual environment. However, this approach isn’t without limitations. While players enjoy conversational freedom, the model requires boundaries to ensure responses remain pertinent to the discussion.
Furthermore, the team emphasizes the need to refine the model to prevent biases and stereotypes in generated responses, ensuring authenticity and appropriateness.
Regarding integration into future Ubisoft games, the aim is to create a flexible framework adaptable across various game budgets and genres, catering to both indie projects and blockbuster titles.
