Despite many “real life” images are actually fully AI-generated in this day and age, Sony has their own trick up its sleeves as the Japanese giant who has already done lots of technology strives for so many years, decided to implement “digital signature” into images captured by their products.
The technology has just completed its 2nd round of testing according to official sources and for those who need a TL;DR, the in-camera digital signature will serve as the validation data for the origin of the content which will make the lives of professionals relying on proper ownership of photos or just any visual content created by themselves.
Based on real hardware and machine-based digital signature, the technology basically safeguards against undetected manipulation thanks to the generation of said validation data being executed when the shutter button has been pushed down.
This piece of good news not only benefits recreational use but also the real “influencer” category of our world – news agencies, political parties, and basically anything that revolves around the establishment of modern society.
Steering back to the tech itself, Sony and Associated Press’s joint field test was done last month where capture authentication and workflow process were evaluated. Aided by Camera Bits who’s behind Photo Mechanic, the feature will be made available first in the upcoming Alpha 9 III, Alpha 1, and Alpha 7S III whose release dates are teased to be around Spring 2024.
