There have been thermal issues for Intel’s processors since the release of Ivy Bridge. Intel has been said to use lower performing TIM (Thermal Interface Material) between the heat spreader and actual silicon. In fact, some enthusiasts in Japan has delidded the new Core i7 4770K Haswell processor, only to find thermals to improve significantly of even up to 17 °C .
The results are rather impressive. With a Core i7 4770K clocked to 4.4GHz with 1.3V, the temperature under load drops from 90°C to 73°C when swapping out the stock TIM ith Cool Laboratory Liquid Pro (82.0W/mk). With Prolimatech PK-3 (11.2W/mk), the result is only 7°C better, which is still quite good.
