Samsung Singapore has announced the launch of the new 990 EVO NVMe SSD to give you fast storage access without going ham or overspent.
In terms of raw output, the 990 EVO can do 5GBps reads and 4.2GBps writes at maximum with Random IOPS clocking in at 700K in and 800K out respectively. Thanks to the use of Host Memory Buffer (HMB), this DRAM-less drive (Yes, it is, believe it or not) is capable of directly accessing the DRAM of the system for matching performance against other DRAM-fitted drives in the market.
The drive is also great in power efficiency which is rated at up to 70% improvement over the older 870 EVO Plus so no problem dropping a new shiny 990 EVO into a laptop and still enjoying the same battery life as before. It can also maintain a fairly good temperature range so that thermal throttling doesn’t happen.
Compatibility-wise, it can fully harness its power through a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot or PCIe 5.0 x2 slot so no matter it is the latest and greatest rig or a couple of years old system, it can go in just fine,
And yeah, don’t forget the Samsung Magician software that offers health check and firmware upgrade – certainly one of the reason why some people sticks to Samsung drives in the first place.
