It has been predicted that the new iPhone 5S will come in June 2013 in 6-8 different colours. The colours will presumably be similar to the ones which the current iPod Touch comes in.

Judging from the predictions, one can realise the difference in the apple DNA comparing leaderships between Steve Jobs and Tim Cook. Steve Jobs was determined to make Apple different, be it in a good or bad way. While everyone was enjoying video chatting and 3G video calls using their front cameras on the cellphone, Steve Jobs decides to not include a front camera in the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3Gs. He thinks that being different from the other brands is the DNA of Apple. That is why he always supported his own technology and marketing them as “Apple branded” and different from anything else on the market. The clear differentiation in product lineup for Apple during Steve Job’s times was proved to work very well, and Apple grew to become the top technology company in the world. However, when Tim Cook took over, the started to be swayed by market trends, losing the focus on a niche and differentiated market. We are seeing the more products to meet different customer needs. First was the announcement and launch of iPad Mini, which purpose of the product was just to be in that segment of the market which Steve could never see going into. later was the introduction of iPod Touch in various colours and actually giving consumers choices to make. It’s good for consumers and they have more choice now, but if Steve was still around, I guess he would not agree with what Tim is doing. Steve wanted control for his products. Tim gave the control to the market. With rumors for the iPhone 5s, we now see how Apple is giving into consumers to make their choices. Will Apple lose their competitive edge? I have not yet come to a conclusion, but as news of Apple arise day after day, I think I can get closer to my stance.
