Exactly 10 years back in 2008, ASUS introduced their first G-1000HA 1000W Power Supply at COMPUTEX 2008. As their focus of products moved towards other PC DIY components, they gradually dropped their power supply series from their list of product portfolio. Today, at the ROG Press Event held in Taipei, ASUS reintroduced a new series of Power Supply for their ROG brand, known as the ROG Thor. This is also the first ever ROG Power Supply Unit.
The ROG Thor is dedicated for PC Gamers and DIY enthusiasts whom only wants the best in their systems. The ROG Thor 1200W Platinum is designed and made with different goals in mind.
Reliability
For a start, ASUS used their knowledge in PCB design to create the ROG Thor 1200W Platinum. The power supply houses premium hardware components such as Japanese capacitors in order to ensure reliability for the long run. This is also why ASUS ROG is willing to give the ROG Thor 1200W Platinum a 10-year warranty.
Maintenance
ASUS also reused the technology used in the fans of their graphics card onto the ROG Thorn 1200W Platinum. The large 135mm wing-blade fan on this power supply is also IP5X-certified. This means that the fan blades are dust prove, and that dust will not accumulate on the fan blades. This way, there will be much lesser maintenance on this power supply to remove dust balls.
Efficiency
The “Platinum” branding within this power supply serves a purpose. The ROG Thor 1200W Platinum has been carefully designed in order to achieve the best possible efficiency. This is also why this power supply has been awarded the 80 PLUS Platinum certification for high energy efficiency.
Aesthetic Design
Hopping on to the trend of adding RGB to every single hardware component, the ROG Thor 1200W Platinum also spots a futuristic RGB lighting on its side. A ROG logo will light up according to your preferred choice of colour and of course, it is supported by Aura Sync and will be able to work with an extensive Aura ecosystem.
Moreover, a LED screen on the side also shows the user the power supplies current wattage. Overall, the ROG Thor 1200W Platinum really sets itself apart from any other PSUs in the market.
Modularity
The ROG Thor 1200W Platinum is a fully modular power supply. This means that you can choose to only connect the cables you need for your system. Such modular designs are only seen on the top-of-the-line products from other more well-known brands. Of course, we can expect that the ROG Thor 1200W to target enthusiasts whom only wants the best.
Our Thoughts
The release of the ROG Thor 1200W signifies the return of ASUS into the power supply scene. However, it also showed us that ASUS is in desperate need of market expansion into many different product line-ups due to the dwindling revenue within the PC DIY segment. Nonetheless, we are happy to see the new PSU from ASUS, and will look forward to building a new ROG system that is almost fully integrated ROG products.
