The LG SIGNATURE series of products belongs to LG’s ultra premium lineup which features the best of the best technology in the world. The LG SIGNATURE G6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV is their current flagship that is available for purchase. So what makes this smart television so special? Let’s find out more with an unit of the 65 inch LG SIGNATURE G6 we managed to get for review.
With a slew of awards under its name, the LG SIGNATURE G6 OLED 4K HDR TV stands out from any other competing products with its unimaginable unique design and outstanding visual and aural experience it provides. These are all made possible with the use of the latest available technology in the market.
Such thin designs are only possible with the use of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. OLED also boasts many other benefits such as high accuracy representation of colours, which results in a much higher contrast ratio.
The term “crystal clear” should be an understatement for the images seen on this TV system. As each pixel has got their own dedicated light source with LG’s “Self-lighting Pixel” technology, the images presented on TV are seemingly ultra realistic.
When displaying black, these OLED can simply turns off, creating the darkest black images as intended, rather than having non-uniform light which pollutes the adjacent pixels on the TV of other competing technologies.
Despite its extremely thin design, the LG Signature G6 TV can still be mounted on the wall. The soundbar/controller unit that holds on to the display panel is versatile, and can act as both a display stand as well as a mounting unit. Despite the change in the orientation of the soundbar, quality and general direction of the sounds produced will not be affected, as it will still be facing the audience. Furthermore, the speaker units are specially designed and created with harman/kardon to ensure that the audiences gets the best of both worlds in picture and sound.
With all these amazing specifications and technology, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV even supports Ultra High Definition 4K resolutions, High Dynamic Range and 3D videos. With the beautiful amalgamation of hardware and software, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV is poised to present audiences with an experience that have never been as good as before.
Interface Design and WebOS 3.0
All LG Smart Televisions are equipped with WebOS, bringing much more content available to the television. We were particularly pleased with WebOS, as many 3rd party video streaming apps were available. The access to the WebOS menu is also universal, and users can switch between different apps for types videos easily.
The interaction between the user and the television are completed by the TV remotes. LG has included not one, but two of such remotes within the whole TV package.
On the left is the LG Premium Magic Remote Control. This looks like a conventional TV remote control, but in fact it does much more. This remote works like an “air mouse”, and by pointing the remote at the TV, a cursor will appear, allowing you to interact directly with the different user interfaces on the TV directly. Moreover, it also has a built-in microphone which is capable of speech-to-text transcribing for quick voice commands and inputs to the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV.
The Card Slim Magic remote control on the right aims to provide a minimal physical user interface to the user instead. Both remote controls are fully capable of controlling all the functions and features on the television.
Understanding the needs of the local community, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV also has many applications that are localized and built to the local community. One of such is Mediacorp’s Toggle application. Many Mediacorp drama and serials fans will be elated! They can finally watch catch-up TV from all Mediacorp channels from the Toggle application on the TV directly. Of course, many other applications such as YouTube, Arirang and Netflix are also available. Other apps can also be discovered under the LG Content Store.
Of course, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV also supports wireless display technology like Miracast and Intel WiDi. This allows mobile devices to share their screen on the television. In our case, we managed to stream both audio and video content from an Android smartphone to the TV via Miracast. With an Karaoke application installed on the phone, the family was able to enjoy a great Karaoke experience right at the comfort of home.
Our Experiences
In Singapore, most of the free to air channels are currently available over the air in digital formats. Of course, being a flagship Smart TV, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV is able to receive both digital and analogue signals. However, most over the air channels only transmit at a maximum of FullHD 1080p resolution. This means that some sort of upscaling would be done in order for these live digital video streams to fit the whole 4K display panel.
Upscaling of video resolution essentially means that the video image will be stretched. Similar to how images will be seen as more pixelated when stretched bigger, such conditions will also apply to videos. Most television units have a built in upscaler to properly increase the video image size and use pre/post processing to reduce the side effects of upscaling. If upscaling was done well, it could even apparently improve the details of an image.
We felt that the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV’s built in 4K upscaler did an excellent job. Despite viewing only 1080p content, there were no visible distortion or signs of images being stretched from the naked eye. The overall video stream remained crystal clear as if viewing actual native 4K content.
The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV has the ability to convert any 2D video streams into 3D modes. It also supports any native 3D video input. With the given 3D glasses, we were able to enjoy great 3D content, as if we in a actual movie theatre.
Of course, nothing beats the experience of viewing HDR 4K videos on a HDR 4K television. We had all the right equipment in place to produce the ultimate home theatre experience. Indeed, we were not prepared for what we were about to expect.
HDR 4K videos on the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV was simply stunning. Playing a demo 4K HDR video from NASA, we were truly immersed into the content that was coming from this piece of excellent display. With LG’s OLED Black technology, the deep blacks were well blended into the environment. It seemed as it there was nothing else but a wonderful image right in front of your eyes. The photos that I have taken served no justice for the actual high quality images that were produced right in front of the eyes. We were indeed amazed at such a never seen before video quality from a TV.
Coupled with the TV’s built in 60W, 4.2-channel speaker bar that delivers incredible sounds for its size, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV has possibly made a home theater setup even better than an actual cinema. This all-rounder speaker system was tested to work very well with both movies and any genre of music.
Conclusion
The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV is the best television that we have tested thus far. It emerges as the top of the class, being able to perform well in all aspects of visual and aural entertainment. It’s unimaginable 3mm thin design sets it apart of any other televisions available in the market.
If you are looking for a new television installation for your house, do consider the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV. It will very likely make your relatives and friends green with envy during their visit for this coming Chinese New Year.
