Ms Lee recalled that earlier in that morning of the incident, she was parking her car house when her friend called. After chatting for more than 40 minutes in the car, she realised that her iPhone was getting unusually hot. She then wanted to end the call but the “End Call” button failed to work. Ms Lee became frustrated and pressed on the button a few more times. At that point, the screen “popped”, splitting the phone and sending shattered glass right into her eye. She panicked and threw her phone onto the car’s dashboard, damaging the display console of the car as well.
She immediately got her colleagues to send her to a nearby hospital where doctors found out that her eye irritations was caused by minor scratches and abrasions from a hard object. She was fine after some clinical treatments.
Ms Lee said that she bought the iPhone 5 in September last year. She has accidentally dropped it once, causing the upper right corner to be bent. Occasionally, the screen will become unresponsive, but the phone is still generally in a good working condition. She was shocked when her phone exploded as she thought that such things such never happen on a high-end smartphone.
Reporters has asked Apple’s repair department on the incident and one of their employees stated that the incident was not caused by the long duration of her call. They have to further investigate on the case to find out the underlying reason of the incident. He also stressed that the device will not be covered under warranty. Ms Lee did not expect any compensation from Apple, but just wanted to alert other iPhone 5 users to be more careful if similar problems surface.
