August was an exciting month for Huawei—the Chinese multinational technology company best known for phones and tablets announced the launch of its first gaming display in Singapore. And it isn’t just any gaming display. It’s the Huawei MateView GT: a 34-inch curved ultra-wide gaming display that features a fast 165Hz refresh rate and incredible 90% DCI-P3 colours to ensure an immersive gaming experience.

Stuff we liked about the Huawei MateView GT
#1: It looks good
The Huawei MateView GT sports a cleaner look as compared to monitors going for a gamer aesthetic. What this means is that it will blend right into any PC setup. If you do prefer a less subtle set up, you’ll have the option to add some colours with the LED lights that are fitted onto the soundbar on the MateView GT.
The touch-sensitive RGB lightstrip is customisable with different colours and speeds. You can cycle it through effects like Static, Breathing, Colorful, Single Waves, Ripple Waves, Colorful Flow, Colorful Ripples and Flowing Waves. The monitor itself has slim bezels around for maximum screen real estate.
A black metal stand holds up the display and looks premium and feels sturdy. The display may be lifted to a height of 110m and pitched at an angle of up to 5 degrees forward and 20 degrees back using the stand. Unfortunately, there’s no swivel and nothing to keep the cords organized.
If your desk is unable to fit the massive display, you can choose to mount it on the wall with the VESA 100×100 mm wall mount that comes with your purchase.
#2: Immersive Surround Display delivers great gaming visuals
The MateView GT is a gaming monitor by default – we’ve got to put it’s gaming visuals to the test. The 34-inch display has a 21:9 aspect ratio, which enhances the immersive experience that you’ll get with many games. The 3440 x 1440 resolution translates to 109 pixels per inch (PPI), which is ideal for gaming. The MateView GT’s 1500R curve also makes it more immersive than the 1800R curve seen on many monitors. The MateView GT’s VA panel’s 10-bit color depth, 165Hz refresh rate, and reaction time of 4 milliseconds will be good enough for casual gamers.
Since Huawei describes the MateView GT as “A striking, sports car-inspired design”, we thought it was apt for us to test a racing gaming, Forza Horizon 4, on the monitor.
In gameplay, colors were rich, contrast was excellent, black levels were rich, and brightness was great with a high dynamic range (HDR) option that you could switch to.
#3: It’s got an integrated Soundbar and Dual-microphone System
At the base of its stand, the MateView GT features a built-in soundbar with two 5W speakers fitted into it. For built-in speakers of this size, sound quality is pretty decent and loudness is adequate as well. It features clean mids and highs, making it ideal for casual listening or online meetings. There’s bass, but it’s not as strong as we’d want. The monitor also sports a built-in microphone with 4-metre-Sound Pickup, Background Noise Cancellation and Echo Cancellation features.
We loved how the built-in soundbar and microphone can potentially neaten up your desk as you do away with external speakers and headphones. Perfect for those going for a minimalistic look. For the best experience during hardcore gaming sessions, we’d still suggest using headphones, though.
#4: It’s got additional gaming features
Huawei takes it to another level by including built-in gaming features on the MateView GT. Dive On the monitor’s menu, you will see some gaming features like Darkfield control, refresh rate display, and crosshairs. The Darkfield control feature increases the colour contrast with an emphasis on darker images. Dark colors are made more visible so that you can spot hidden enemies easily. Crosshairs, on the other hand, adds a static crosshair overlay to the centre of the screen to help competitive first-person shooter gamers to quickly target their opponents.
The MateView GT even has a low blue light mode with TÜV Rheinland-certified low blue light emissions and flicker-free operation to reduce eye fatigue during intense gaming sessions.
#5: Connectivity is great
Connectivity won’t be an issue. The monitor comes with 2 HDMI ports, 1 DisplayPort, a 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack, and 2 USB Type-C ports. One of the Type-C Ports can support display input, while the other is used only for the power supply. Avid gamers who game on various platforms can rest easy knowing that they can connect a PC along with two consoles to the display.
#6: It’s great for binge-watchers too
With giant monitor like the MateView GT, you’re going to want to binge-watch your favourite shows on it. With true-to-life colors, bright output, and HDR support, HDR content looks pretty good on the monitor. If you have a high-end TV, though, the MateView GT’s dynamic range won’t be as high.
We’ve got to point out that because it’s an ultrawide monitor, most shows will have black bars on the sides. Fortunately, the screen is huge enough that it won’t be distracting. It works perfectly well for widescreen movies because you can use almost the whole screen, which is great news for avid movie fans!
Stuff we didn’t like about the Huawei MateView GT
#1: It’s a pain to set up
The MateView GT was a joy to use. We only wished that it would have been as much of a joy to set up.
To be clear, the monitor isn’t difficult to set up. In fact, all you have to do is snap on the black metal stand onto the monitor and you’re good to go. That said, the monitor is HUGE. It weighs 6.65 kg without the stand, which makes assembling the MateView GT a whole workout.
Furthermore, because the stand of the monitor is fitted with a rubber surface to prevent the monitor from toppling over, moving or repositioning your monitor will be a chore.
Pro tip: Make sure your table or desk is strong enough to handle a heavy monitor.
#2: Response time might not be suitable for pro gaming
As mentioned previously, the MateView GT’s reaction time of 4 milliseconds will be good enough for casual gamers. For competitive gamers, however, it might not suffice. E-sports focused monitors, for example, often see a response time of 1 millisecond.
The bottom-line: Should you buy the Huawei MateView GT?
If you’re an avid gamer looking for a solid gaming monitor, you will love the MateView GT’s awesome visual specs, 165Hz refresh rate, 4 millisecond response time, and multiple gaming features. Our only gripe was the installation process—but that’s literally a one-off thing. At $798, Huawei’s first high-end gaming display is easy to recommend.
Pricing and availability
The Huawei MateView GT retails at $798 .
