Introduction
Just upgraded to the latest and greatest fibre home internet? You will soon realise that your home wireless set up is not fast enough to keep up with the subscribed fibre speeds. Even if you are equipped with the best Wireless AC router available on the market, you will still need a Wireless AC receiver to jump on the Wireless AC bandwagon. Today, we will take a look at the D-Link DWA-582 Wireless AC1200 Dual Band PCI Express Adapter and find out how fast wireless speeds can really get.
Inside the box
While we unbox the D-Link DWA-582 Wireless AC1200 Dual Band PCI Express Adapter, we were greeted by an important notice prompting the user to install the software being installation of the Wireless adapter.
Inside the box are the drivers CD, 2 x wireless antennas, quick installation guide, warranty information and a low profile bracket.
The 2 x wireless antennas can be attached easily to the wireless card by screwing it in.
The D-Link DWA-582 Wireless AC1200 Dual Band PCI Express Adapter uses a PCI-e x1 interface that is compatible with all PCI-e width slots.
Performance
To test the performance of the D-Link DWA-582 Wireless AC1200 Dual Band PCI Express Adapter, we hooked it up to a desktop PC that based on a ASUS Maximus VI Gene motherboard. The desktop PC is left in a room, separated by a concrete wall, about 15 meters away from the ASUS RT-AC87U wireless router. For comparison, we also tested the Gigabit LAN speed direct from the same desktop, as well as D-Link DWA 123 Wireless N USB adapter.
Conclusion
Even though D-Link DWA-582 Wireless AC1200 Dual Band PCI Express Adapter’s performance is far from comparable to the wired connection, we thought that the improvements from Wireless N is already significant for an upgrade. Additionally, we know that the DWA-582 is capable of even higher speeds if there was a stronger Wi-Fi signal strength from the router. Just by looking at the speeds, we can conclude that the DWA-582 can reach speeds beyond Wireless N, as we have never actually seen Wireless N going pass 250Mbps.
The DWA-582 could be a great choice for users who own a Mini-ITX system as this wireless network card comes in a low profile form factor. It can be easily integrated into a small form factor platform, providing seamless and fast internet connectivity to the end user.
Overall, we thought that D-Link DWA-582 Wireless AC1200 Dual Band PCI Express Adapter works well for the price we paid it for. Retailing at a price of 55SGD, it is the default choice for someone who wants affordable Wireless AC.
