MediaTek has introduced the Kompanio 540, a next-generation processor built to power the latest generation of Chromebooks, addressing the growing demand for faster, more efficient computing in classrooms and on the go. The company said the new chip aims to help students learn, create, and stay productive in a digital-first world.
Equipped with an octa-core CPU featuring two Arm Cortex-A78 cores, a dual-core graphics engine, and support for LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage, it delivers smooth multitasking and reliable performance across daily activities like browsing, streaming, and light gaming. MediaTek also highlighted its ability to handle more intensive applications such as STEM software, Tinkercad, and Minecraft Education Edition.
Additionally, the manufacturer also claimed 35% longer battery life than rival chips, alongside fanless, quiet operation suited for learning environments. It also supports high-resolution, power-efficient video playback even when connected to external displays.
Availability
The first Chromebooks powered by MediaTek Kompanio 540 are expected to hit the market in January 2026.
