It’s well-known that Apple has often integrated existing features and functions rather than inventing new ones, particularly in recent years.
Thus, the announcement of ChatGPT integration into iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia isn’t much of a surprise. However, it appears one chatbot isn’t enough, as Apple is reportedly finalizing a deal with Google to incorporate Gemini into their ecosystem as well.
According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is actively negotiating with both Google and the AI-focused startup Anthropic. He suggests that the partnership with Google will be completed by this fall, aligning with the release timeframe of Apple Intelligence.
Apple remains confident that Apple Intelligence will operate both on-device and through online-based LLMs, performing tasks such as answering questions, summarizing text, and generating images. For more complex requests, users will be prompted to permit ChatGPT to handle the task via OpenAI’s service.
This aligns with hints from Craig Federighi, Apple’s Head of Software Engineering, about additional chatbot integrations to offer users more flexibility in choosing their preferred AI companion.
Interestingly, Meta attempted to integrate its services and models into Apple Intelligence, but apparently Apple declined the offer due to its “bad privacy policies” track record.
Now, we can only wait for the official launch of Apple Intelligence to see how these integrations unfold.
