Kaspersky Lab partners academic institutions in Singapore to ignite cybersecurity education
Kaspersky Lab today announced its partnership with three tertiary institutions in Singapore to support the development of cybersecurity education. It has signed three separate Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore Institute of Technology and Singapore University of Technology and Design.
As part of the agreement, Kaspersky Lab will provide knowledge exchange and consultations for events, conferences, and educational activities in the field of cybersecurity. Kaspersky Lab will also be involved in the development of educational content, training materials and educational curriculum, lending its expertise in the implementation of the learning process.
Kaspersky Lab’s recent research indicates that one-third of organisations place improving their in-house security expertise among the top three priorities of their IT security investment. In Singapore, statistics show an acute shortfall for cybersecurity professionals today, with only 0.8 percent of ICT workers trained as IT security specialists. The Cyber Security Agency expects the demand for cybersecurity professionals to double to 9,700 professionals by 2021[1].
Stephan Neumeier, Managing Director, Asia Pacific at Kaspersky Lab said, “Cyber threats are on a continuous rise. Organisations are challenged with finding the right talent to combat cyber threats in a fast growing tech sector. We want to work together to boost cybersecurity education and starting with the academic institutions is a way forward. We hope to share our expertise to nurture and empower the next generation of skilled graduates in the cybersecurity space.”
The agreement will focus on building the framework for cybersecurity education within the school curriculum, allowing students to develop their skills and experience in the sector. The academic institutions will also benefit from the experts from Kaspersky Lab, who will work with the faculty and lecturers to provide greater insights on cybersecurity. The “Train-the-Trainer” programme will ensure that students in these institutions are able to obtain industry insights and experience that will be beneficial to their careers after graduation.
Academic awards made possible by Kaspersky Lab will be implemented to encourage participation as well as reward outstanding students. Kaspersky Lab will also fund researchers, postdocs and PhD students for preparatory work and participation and/or organisation of cyber-security related competitions and events.
“In addition to sound theoretical foundations, a range of applied skills are required to understand and defend against real-world cybersecurity threats. SUTD partners with industry players such as Kaspersky Lab so as to complement our students’ experience at SUTD with in-depth knowledge and practices of the cybersecurity industry,” said Assistant Professor Nils Tippenhauer for Singapore University of Technology and Design.
“As a university of applied learning, SIT welcomes the sharing of information and expertise by Kaspersky Lab to help broaden the cybersecurity knowledge and skills of our students,” said Associate Professor Forest Tan, Cluster Director, Infocomm Technology, Singapore Institute of Technology.
“We are pleased to collaborate with industry stakeholders such as Kaspersky Lab. This collaboration will enhance the knowledge of our students in cybersecurity and enhance their skills in defending information systems,” said Oh Chin Lock, Director/School of Informatics & IT, Temasek Polytechnic.
