Singapore, 9 March 2018 – Garmin and OCBC Bank today introduced Garmin Pay, a contactless payment solution that allows users to make secure payments from the smartwatch, without the need of a phone or wallet. Launched for the first time in Singapore, Garmin Pay will be available on the vívoactive® 3. Users can now make contactless payments simply by tapping their Garmin smartwatch at any contactless payment terminals island wide.
Garmin Pay, enabled by FitPay™, supports Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards from OCBC Bank. Adding their OCBC debit and credit cards into their Garmin Pay wallet gives users the same rewards and benefits of the physical cards, with the added convenience of having them right on the wrist.
Utilising the Garmin Pay feature gives athletes the freedom to enjoy their runs or workout sessions without having to take a phone or their wallet along. When in need of a bottle of water or a quick bite to eat, Garmin Pay™ contactless payment solution lets users pay for purchases with their watch and keep on moving.
“Anyone who is out and about being active can relate to the struggle of where to stash a credit card or cash and has had to forgo a post-workout snack or coffee as a result,” said Mr. Engelhard (Al) Sundoro, Managing Director, Garmin South Asia. “We’re solving that dilemma with Garmin Pay, an exciting feature on the vívoactive 3, with more devices to come. We want to be true training partners and support the active lifestyles of our users.”
“In recent years, we have seen wearable technologies gain considerable ground and they have moved beyond just simple tools to track workouts – They are now a lifestyle statement that is constantly worn by the consumers. OCBC Cards is proud to partner with Garmin Pay to provide a convenient form of payment for our customers. With this, they no longer need to carry a wallet, cards, cash or even their mobile phones to settle their payments,” said Mr Desmond Tan, Head of Group Lifestyle Financing, OCBC Bank.
“Mastercard believes in providing consumers with the fastest and safest ways to pay. We want to give our cardholders the choice and peace of mind to make more secure digital payments from a variety of connected devices through a simple tap or touch. Our vision is to provide greater consistency, security, and speed for everyday payments. With wearable devices that support tap-to-pay functionality on the rise, we will be able to accelerate the growth of contactless and cashless payments in Singapore,” said Deborah Heng, Country Manager, Mastercard Singapore.
“At Visa, we are committed to driving the adoption of new payment innovations, and our partnership with Garmin enables us to bring contactless payments to more people in Singapore. Singaporeans who lead an active lifestyle can now rely on their Garmin device to make payment during their fitness routines without the inconvenience or worry of carrying cash.
