FOR LOCOMOTIVE SAFETY
Singapore, 30 January 2018 – Dimension Data, the USD8 billion global technology integrator and managed
services provider, announced today that it will work with Institute for
Information Industry (III) to implement a special project called “Locomotive
Safety Improvement Research & Field Experiment Program”. Under the project,
Dimension Data will cover roadside implementation and maintenance services as
part of a partnership alliance with other ICT partners to develop a safe, eco-friendly
and intelligent locomotive system.

To counter challenges of road safety and high
fatalities of young university students that Taiwan currently faces as home to
the world’s highest density of motorcycles, the Ministry of Transportation
and Communications of the Republic of China (Taiwan),
(MOTC)commissioned this project to Smart System Institute (SSI) at III and
Taiwan Telematics Industry Association (TTIA), which will leverage innovative
technologies to better manage the locomotive system through the development of
an IoT management platform.

As part of Dimension Data’s involvement in
taking charge of the project’s roadside column deployment and system
integration component, it will set up two experiment sites at local
universities – one at Fo Guang University in Yilan County, and the other at
National Dong Hwa University in Hualien County.

The ten junctions (including T intersections and
downhill curves) enroute the universities’ campuses were identified as high
risk areas for traffic accidents, which resulted in Dimension Data setting up
roadside columns to act as alert stations that will detect oncoming vehicles
from the opposite direction to avoid collisions.

Specially designed RFID transmitters will be
installed on 3,000 motorcycles and 10 cars[1]; these will send
signals and data to the RFID transceivers at roadside columns each time they
approach the ten junctions, to detect an oncoming vehicle. The collected data
and images captured at these roadside columns will be sent back to an IoT
management platform via 4G/LTE network for further analysis.
