improve caregiving for the elderly through movement tracking, fall and
emergency alerts. A mobile app connecting volunteers to places where one can
make a difference. These were some of the innovative solutions from
participating teams on display at the Singapore Land Authority (SLA)’s OneMap
IdeaWorks! Exhibition and Award Ceremony held today.

OneMap IdeaWorks!, launched by the SLA in July
this year, brought together technologists, data scientists and community
organisations to co-develop geospatial solutions to overcome daily challenges
faced by communities through the use of the new OneMap and open geospatial
data, in support of the Smart Nation initiative.

This campaign attracted challenge statements
from over 30 community and public agency partners. These challenges spanned
from social services, the environment, health, transport to heritage.
Technologists and data scientists responded – students and professionals from
universities, polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education (ITE), start-ups
and the industry. Tsang Ling of Team NYP from Nanyang Polytechnic said, “Working with
community partners to solve community problems is a meaningful learning
opportunity. And
seeing our idea grow into a complete solution for the community gives me a
great sense of accomplishment.”

to grow a geospatial eco-system to co-create innovative solutions that benefit
the community in our progress towards making Singapore a Smart Nation”,
explained SLA Chief Executive, Tan Boon Khai. Mr Amos Wee, President of the
Singapore National Stroke Association said, “Looking at the teams’ solutions,
we are encouraged that persons with special needs and caregivers are given the
technological means to overcome challenges in improving mobility and navigation.
We look forward to more of such initiatives in the future.”

Following three months of ideation, prototyping
and technical sessions, four teams made it to the finals after the preliminary
round of judging. Dr Chong Yoke Sin, Chief Enterprise Business Group of Starhub
Ltd, who sat on the judging panel said, “I would like to congratulate SLA for
the successful run of IdeaWorks, in which StarHub had the opportunity to make
contributions to. There are certainly many interesting and creative ideas
coming from the participating teams, and we hope some of these entries can be
applied to help address the needs of community organisations.”

In addition to exhibition booths demonstrating
the solutions by participating teams, apps and services by adopters of the new
OneMap were also showcased to the public at this Ceremony.

The new OneMap is a mobile-centric platform
offering location-based information and services for use by everyone. It also
offers open Application Programming Interface (API) services for free to users
for the development of apps and services.
