(ASIA PACIFIC, 17 March 2015) – Singaporean photographer Chua Boon Kiat Jansen is today named as the winner of the Singapore National Award as part of the prestigious 2015 Sony World Photography Awards.
Chua’s winning image “Douce enfance” was chosen as the single best photograph taken by a Singapore photographer entered into any of the ten Open categories of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s biggest photography competition.
Chua, a client consultant and keen amateur photographer who only began shooting seriously last year, has won a Sony α7 camera. He will also be flown to London to attend the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony on 23 April 2015, and his winning photograph will be shown as part of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London from 24 April to 10 May 2015.
Talking about his win, Chua commented, “Winning this award means the world to me. Being a new photographer, I am constantly awed by many images shared by people on social media. Never have I dreamt that my piece would emerge as a winner this year. Deep down, there is still much uncertainty about many aspects of photography, and I know there are still lots to improve on. This award ascertained the approach I have undertaken, and I will continue to work even harder to achieve greater heights with my photography, and hopefully produce better images in the future.”
Describing the image, he said, “Taken from the Bay East Garden of Gardens by the Bay, this is a panoramic view of the modern Marina Bay Waterfront. My original intention was to capture a sunset that day, but it started raining. I managed to find a shelter and decided to wait out the rain. Thankfully, the rained stopped just in time for me to catch the last moments of the fast fading blue hours. This composite image is a panoramic stitch-up 15 frames, each with 3 exposure digitally blended.”
Runner up positions for the Singapore National Award were given to:
- 2nd place – David Wirawan
- 3rd place – Heng Wang Tan
