OCZ quits RAM market, focuses entirely on SSDs.
Back in August last year, computer peripherals maker OCZ announced its decision to pull out of the entry-level, budget DRAM market. The company explained back then that this was a move for them to concentrate on the high-performance peripherals market which was more profitable.
OCZ’s latest move was announcing its exit from the DRAM market – completely. And it is expected to be completed by the 28 February 2011. With DRAM prices falling continuously, exiting the market at this time may be a blessing for the company.
However, this also means the loss of its critically-acclaimed DRAM products, like the Blade and XTE series.
OCZ’s Chief Executive Officer, Ryan Petersen explained OCZ’s focus on the SSD market over other products.
“We (OCZ) have focused on building the OEM and enterprise segments of our business, and last month we announced a mass production order from a Tier-1 OEM for our enterprise-class SSDs, reflecting the reliability, speed and total cost of ownership solid state drives provide over traditional mechanical hard drives. We believe the market opportunity for SSDs is significant, and to that end, we will continue to invest in research and development to extend our leadership position, and we also plan to increase our sales and marketing efforts in order to facilitate continued revenue growth and increased market share as SSDs gain adoption in all segments.”
OCZ has made it clear that their focus from now on will be on Solid State Drives (SSDs).
Only time will tell if they have made the right move.
