Framework has announced a major update to its flagship 16-inch laptop, bringing next-generation performance and expanded upgrade options while maintaining its core focus on repairability and modular design.
Originally launched in 2023 as a high-performance, desktop-replacement system, the Framework Laptop 16 stood out with its modular input system and swappable graphics module. And now, the addition of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU will provide up to 40% higher gaming framerates than the Radeon RX 7700S option it debuted with. Importantly, the new GPU module is backwards compatible with existing Framework Laptop 16 units, ensuring current owners can upgrade without replacing their machine.
They also s revamped the thermal system, adopting Honeywell phase change thermal interface material and optimized fan blade geometry to cut noise while supporting 100W sustained TGP. The RTX 5070 module also enables display output and power input via the rear USB-C port, while the internal display now supports NVIDIA G-SYNC on the 165Hz 2560×1600 panel.
CPU options are also stepping into the next generation with AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 Series, including the 8-core Ryzen AI 7 350 and 12-core Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, both rated at 45W sustained TDP. The updated mainboard can drive four simultaneous external displays, while the laptop continues to support up to 96GB of DDR5-5600 memory and dual M.2 SSDs for as much as 10TB of storage.
To match these performance gains, Framework is introducing a new default 240W USB-C power adapter that supports the latest USB-PD 3.1 spec. According to the company, this compact unit allows the system to sustain full load operation without draining the battery, a notable jump from the 180W adapter it first pioneered.
Other refinements include the adoption of the second-generation webcam, improved rigidity in the CNC aluminum top cover, and updated modular keyboard firmware to prevent accidental wake events. Keyboard options have also been refreshed, with most dropping the Windows logo for Linux users, while one design now carries a Copilot logo for those leaning into Microsoft’s AI assistant ecosystem.
Framework is also cutting the price of the original Laptop 16, now starting at $1,299 USD. Ryzen 9 models are available in limited quantities, while Ryzen 7 configurations will continue in production as a lower-cost entry point.
As with previous models, the new Laptop 16 will be available pre-configured with Windows 11 or as a DIY Edition, supporting Linux and user-selected components.
