ASUS has announced they are working with Microsoft to create the new ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X gaming handheld.
Aimed to bridge the gap between console familiarity and PC flexibility, both models run on AMD’s new Ryzen Z2 series chips with the standard Ally sports the Ryzen Z2 A, optimized for efficient portable gaming, while the Ally X gets the more powerful Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, equipped with an onboard NPU to support features like AMD’s FSR, RSR, and Fluid Motion Frames.
Ergonomics also see a noticeable shift as ASUS ditches the “Switch-style” profile in favor of a more console-centric design that mirrors the feel of an Xbox controller. This includes redesigned grips and a more natural handhold that should appeal to long-time Xbox gamers looking for familiar comfort in a handheld.
The Ally X version steps things up even further with impulse triggers, offering dynamic haptic feedback for supported titles – a nod to the immersive experience Xbox players expect.
On the software front, ASUS and Microsoft have fine-tuned the experience with a custom Xbox-centric interface layered on top of Windows 11 like the full-screen Xbox UI, refined navigation, and reduced system overhead to ensure players can jump into games quickly. Despite the Xbox branding, the handhelds maintain full access to non-Xbox titles, modding, and standard PC applications, preserving the open nature of the Windows platform.
With this collaboration, ASUS aims to deliver a handheld that merges the best of both worlds: console-like ease of use and PC-grade flexibility. Launches are planned for over 30 countries including the U.S., UK, Japan, Germany, and Australia, with broader availability to follow.
