AMD has just announced its second-ever Ryzen processor with X3D technology, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
As the successor to the original Ryzen 7 7800X3D, this new model offers an 8-core, 16-thread configuration with Zen 5 architecture. While the core and thread count remains the same, performance gets a notable boost with Zen 5, as the base clock now sits at 4.7GHz and can reach up to 5.2GHz with max boost.
A key highlight is the 2nd Gen AMD 3D V-Cache design, with a 64MB cache positioned directly under the processor. This placement brings the CCD closer to the cooling solution, which AMD says will support extreme overclocking capabilities with a fully unlocked setup right out of the box.
In AMD’s own benchmarks, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D shows an average improvement of 8% over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, with certain titles seeing double-digit gains and smoother gameplay due to better 1% lows. This enhanced performance comes with a balanced 120W TDP and a combined cache total of 104MB.
For those seeking an edge, AMD claims it’s “20% better than competing products” like the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K. However, with Intel’s Arrow Lake taking a different approach, it’s wise to treat this “AMD win” just by word of mouth, and let’s see if reviewers across the world could prove its legitimacy.
Availability
Priced at $479, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will be available at major retailers and local DIY PC shops starting November 7.
