Huawei’s P series has always been focused on their camera as well as their design, appealing to the younger generation and their needs and wants. Here are the upgrades that Huawei made over the P20 series, as well as the differences between the two latest models – P30 and P30 Pro.
P30 Pro – Quad Camera
Starting with the main star of the show, the P30 Pro. As leaked by the CEO himself, this flagship comes with a quad-lens setup. Yes, four lens just on the rear of the device!
Compared to the P30, the Ultra-Wide Angle lens is upgraded from 16MP to a 20MP one, mirroring that of the Mate 20 Pro. The Telephoto lens is also upgraded with 5X Optical Zoom, from a 3X. This is done without increasing the thickness of the device through a periscope-inspired design. Not to leave out digital zoom, it also features a decently usable 50X Digital Zoom, which is thanks to the included Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS).
The mysterious fourth camera is actually a Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor. This allows the smartphone to recognize the distance of the various subjects in the scene. This is done through the measurement of the round trip time of the light in the various points in an image. As a result, more accurate depictions of bokehs is now possible instead of solely on software.
Rear Camera Specs
- 40MP Wide Angle Lens @ ƒ1.6
- 20MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens @ ƒ2.2
- 8MP Telephoto Lens @ ƒ3.4
- Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor
P30 – Familiar Face
The P30 stuck with the same triple-lens layout that the P20 Pro launched with, while following the setup from the Mate 20. This results in the switching of the original 20MP Monochrome lens to an 16MP Ultra-Wide Angle lens. For the other two lens, the 40MP Wide Angle and 8MP Telephoto (3X optical) lens appears to the same as in previous models.
Rear Camera Specs
- 40MP Wide Angle Lens @ ƒ1.8
- 16MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens @ ƒ2.2
- 8MP Telephoto Lens @ ƒ2.4
SuperSpectrum Sensor
Huawei also included another trick up its sleeve – the SuperSpectrum Sensor. This sensor features a fundamental change from the norm, with the sensor arrangement switching from Red Green Blue Green (RGBG) to Red Yellow Yellow Blue (RYYB). By replacing the green sensors with yellow, they managed to capture up to 40% more light. This in turn bumps up the possible ISO to 204800 and 409600 for the P30 and P30 Pro respectively.
Interesting Additions
In a bid to reduce the size of the notch, Huawei replaced the typical top speaker with what they call “Acoustic Display Technology“. This technology transmits audio from calls or music through the screen with a Maglev (Magnetic Levitation) speaker. Having tried it in a noisy showroom, voices are surprisingly clear and legible. Speaking of screens, the P30 also houses an In-Screen Fingerprint Sensor (optical). All of these add up to a IP68 water/dust resistance rating (IP54 for the P30).
