#1 – Don’t Like Killing Zombies
First and foremost, who doesn’t like blowing out the brains of zombies? If you are the rare few who do not enjoy that, State of Decay 2 might not be for you. Not only will you be missing out on the wide array of ways to take out the undead, you will also not be experiencing the goriness that comes with it. The weight of each swing of the bat can be felt, with the animation and sound effects being done just right.
#2 – Distaste for Exploration & Discovery
Humans are habitual creatures, with some not comfortable with experiencing the unknown. Unfortunately, the game comes with open-world maps, where players can freely explore to their hearts content. With many houses to scavenge and secure, there are definitely a ton to see. Think Assassin’s Creed but in an apocalyptic setting with a zombie survival twist.
#3 – Hate Playing with Friends
If you hate interacting with any humans, there is only bad news from here on out. State of Decay 2 added a new multiplayer co-op feature that allows for up to 4 players to join you in your struggle to survive in this new world. This improvement was sorely missing in its predecessor and is a welcome change to some.
#4 – Dislike Being the Boss
Some enjoy taking charge and managing others, but if you do not fall into this category, State of Decay 2 might disappoint you. The game sees you growing your ragtag band of procedurally generated survivors for your very own colony. You can take control over individuals, or even task them to build or perform important assignments to keep the community up and running in this desolate land. Yes, you can even exile survivors if they are a liability, or if you just want to watch them suffer.
But in all seriousness, State of Decay 2 improved multiple aspects over its previous title. The addition of multiplayer online co-op, bigger maps and a revamped base management system just makes the game better in every way. Undead Labs also added Blood Plague Hearts which gives players a constant focus throughout the playthrough. These are essentially the heart of the infection in specific sections of the map. To take these out, players are forced to survive through hordes of zombies while whittling down the Plague Heart. This adds a much-needed variety to game’s seemingly straightforward experience. All things considered, there are some aspects that State of Decay 2 can be improved. It is generally early into the game’s release, with some bugs and quality of life improvements needing to be fixed/added. Issues like vehicles getting stuck are also surprisingly common too. Not to mention, players who are not hosts will miss out on the base management aspect of the game.
There are also opinions out there that feel that there is a lack of drive when playing it. But as someone who enjoys the colony aspect of the game, there is definitely something to look forward to when launching it. Together with patches and DLCs on the horizon, State of Decay 2 is looking to be a contender for my go-to games.
