Google has introduced AI-powered scam detection features into Android to enhance user protection and safeguard personal information.
Developed in collaboration with financial institutions, the system leverages insights into scam tactics, including how fraudulent messages are structured to appear legitimate. With AI-driven analysis, Android can now detect suspicious patterns and issue real-time warnings during conversations while preserving user privacy—scammers will not be alerted to the warnings.
Notably, the AI operates entirely on-device, eliminating the need for an internet connection. It is enabled by default and applies to conversations involving unsaved phone numbers. Users can take action by reporting and blocking suspicious contacts or dismissing the alert if it’s a false alarm. Google has assured that all reports are shared only with Google and network carriers to refine the AI model further.
As of now, the feature is available in the US, UK, and Canada, with plans for broader expansion. This rollout builds on a previously launched AI-based call screening feature designed to mitigate scam-related risks.
