AMD today announced their next generation of graphics cards powered by their the new RDNA3 architecture. Here’s everything you need to know about RDNA3 and the two new graphics cards that were announced.
RDNA 3 – World’s first chiplet gaming GPU
For the first time, the chiplet architecture design is introduced on a GPU. A chiplet architecture allows the use of a modular approach to best optimize the efficiency and performance of an overall design. It was first made popular with AMD’s Ryzen processors, which has gave them much success in the CPU space.
On the GPU side, AMD is separating the Graphics Compute and Memory components of their IP. In particular for RDNA 3, the Graphics Compute Die (GCD), which focuses on the core graphics processing of the whole GPU, is based on a 5nm design. This contains all the shaders, display engines and a brand new media engine. On the other hand, the Memory Cache Die (MCD), which is built on a 6nm technology, features GDDR6 controllers and 96MB of 2nd generation Infinity Cache. AMD also designed a new chiplet interconnect that allows bandwidth of up to 5.3TB/s between the GCD and MCD.
With this new design, the new RDNA 3 graphics cards are able to achieve a 53% performance per watt improvement over predecessors.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT
Equipped with the latest RDNA 3 architecture, the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT were announced.
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the new flagship graphics card from AMD. It comes with 96 Compute Units which are running at 2.3GHz Game Clock, a 24GB of GDDR6 VRAM, supports DisplayPort 2.1 and AV1 Encode and Decode. The graphics card is rated at a total board power of 355W.
With 12 Compute Units less, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is the little brother to the RX 7900 XTX. It comes with 84 Compute Units which are running at 2GHz Game Clock, a 20GB of GDDR6 VRAM, supports DisplayPort 2.1 and AV1 Encode and Decode. The graphics card is rated at a total board power of 300W.
Pricing and Availability
Both the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT will be made available from the 13th December 2022, at USD 999 and USD 899 respectively.
