26 June 2019, Singapore: OPPO today unveiled its ground-breaking Under-Screen Camera (USC) and MeshTalk, a proprietary decentralised communication technology, at MWC Shanghai 2019. The new reveals underscore the brand’s leadership in smartphone design innovation and new communications technology solutions.
“OPPO is committed to product and technology innovation that creates a more immersive and comprehensive experience for users,” said Qiao Jiadong, Product Manager at OPPO. “USC and MeshTalk are part of OPPO’s vision for the future that we hope will promote the industry’s technological evolution. We also view our technological innovation as a way to expand the imagination while opening up a wide range of application scenarios.”
OPPO premieres first Under-Screen Camera, a new breakthrough in smartphone design innovation
OPPO’s latest solution in its mission to enhance the full-screen display experience, USC, features a customised camera module that captures more light while leveraging optimised algorithms and AI learning to improve camera performance. At the same time, zoning control is employed on the screen to control the pixels in the area directly above the camera. In conjunction with the higher transmittance of the panel material, the technology allows light to pass through the screen, enabling content display to coexist with camera features including photography, face unlock and video calls.
For USC to work, OPPO uses a unique high-transparency material that strikes a balance between display features and light transmittance through the screen. In collaboration with supply chain partners, OPPO also customised the camera module with a larger aperture, a larger sensor and greater pixel size for optimal photography.
OPPO employs a customised software solution for USC, by applying tailored optimisations to its HDR algorithm, haze removal algorithm and white balance algorithm. These enhance brightness and detail, allowing USC to deliver imaging with quality comparable that of mainstream smartphones, while also supporting features like smart beauty mode and photo filters.
OPPO’s MeshTalk technology offers a decentralised short-range communications solution
At MWC Shanghai 2019, OPPO also debuted MeshTalk, a new proprietary decentralised communications technology that enables the transmission of texts, voice messages and voice calls between OPPO devices within a range of 3km without mobile networks, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
OPPO MeshTalk also allows multiple devices to create ad hoc local area networks (LAN), enabling group chat capabilities and expanding communication range via signal relay. MeshTalk supports LAN communications wherever OPPO devices are within signal range of one another.
To develop its MeshTalk technology, OPPO customised the communication chipset to realise the advantages of decentralisation, faster speed and lower power consumption. MeshTalk is an innovative end-to-end communications solution that bypasses base stations, servers and other devices, empowering users with a higher level of privacy.
