Huawei just launched their brand-new P20 and P20 Pro globally, and we got the juicy bits. Here are the key highlights that the P20 and its bigger brother have on showcase.
Triple (and Dual) Camera
24MP Selfie Camera for both
The first thing that everyone will notice is the triple camera that the P20 Pro has on its rear. The 3 individual cameras that it features are the 8MP Telephoto, 40MP RGB and 20MP Mono lens (from the top to the bottom). Does more equal better? Stay tuned for our P20 Pro review as we push its cameras to the limit and figure out what is the deal with an extra camera.
P20 Pro – Triple camera (40MP RGB, 20MP Mono, 8MP Telephoto)
P20 – Dual (12MP RGB, 20MP Mono)
With the triple camera setup of the P20 Pro looking like an exclamation mark, one may wonder why they are not grouped together. But the reason that the guys at Huawei gave was that the 20MP Mono lens is much smaller and thinner than the other lens. This allowed for the third lens be flushed to the device’s body.
Notched Display
Both P20 variants will come with a notch for the front-facing camera and ambient light sensor. But unlike other competitors *ahem* Apple *ahem*, the notch is not forced down your throat and can be hidden through a software setting.
P20 – 5.8″ 18:9 1080 x 2160 (LCD)
P20 Pro – 6.1″ 18.7:9 1080 x 2240 (OLED)
The P20 and P20 Pro also boasts large displays, with 5.8″ and 6.1″ respectively. The screen definitely looks vibrant but do check out our coming review to see how it handles day to day life.
Gradient Design
Both P20s comes with a drop dead gorgeous gradient colored back design that is accentuated through the use of a beautifully molded glass back. Much like the HTC U11, the glass is pretty glossy and can result in it being a fingerprint magnet. To avoid this, both P20s comes with an oleophobic layer of protection on both its front and back, providing a coating that make fingerprints less obvious.
The P20 and P20 Pro comes in Black, Midnight Blue, Champagne Gold, and the oh-so sexy Twilight. As for the color availability of the local launch in Singapore, the information will be released shortly after the global launch.
P20 – 7.65mm
P20 Pro – 7.8mm thin
The P20 and P20 Pro also boasts a thinner design, with a thinness of 7.65mm and 7.8mm respectively. This places it as one of the thinnest smartphone in the market to date. Thinness may not be everything, but the device does feel good on the hand due to its improved ergonomics.
I/Os (or Lack Thereof)
In terms of I/Os, both P20s are pretty sparse. Both come with a fingerprint sensor that is placed at the front, that also acts as a home button. The duo also uses a USB Type-C port for its charging or data transfer needs.
However, they both lack a 3.5mm headphone jack and any sort of microSD expansion. For some, these may be a deal-breaker. But Huawei has already started to follow the market trend, with the headphone jack not existing in the Mate 10 Pro, and it should not be a surprise. Furthermore, the lack of any microSD expansion is also evident in the Mate 10 Pro.
Other Key Info
The P20s are powered by Huawei’s Kirin 970, that is known to be packaged with a Neural-Network Processing Unit (NPU). Although the chipset used has not changed, the software powered by it has improved, allowing for the better utilization of the smart in smartphones.
Both the P20 and P20 Pro also comes with 3400mAh and 4000mAh respectively, with 4GB and 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage. Protecting itself from the weather is the IP53 and IP67 certification for both phones respectively.
